Downloadable Models

This folder contains downloadable models. Not all of the models described at this site are available for others to use (yet).

I created the 3D models using the free SketchUp Make 2017 3D modeling software, the free Blender 3D modeling software, and the free Cura 3D printer slicing application.

Almost all work is done in SketchUp Make 2017. Get it at https://www.sketchup.com/download/all. You may need to create a free account at the site to access the downloads. SketchUp Make is easy to learn by following online tutorials. It just takes lots of practice and experimentation.
Blender is the world’s most difficult to use software. I’m not exaggerating. It feels like it was designed by people who had never used a graphical user interface before. It is awesomely powerful though. I primarily use it to convert model file formats.
Cura is difficult to use until you find the settings that work well for your printer with your filament in your home with your humility and temperature. If any of those variables change, you are back to the drawing board. As long as they stay the same, you can print with consistent quality.

It takes extra effort for me to make 3D models available to others because instructions are usually needed to get good results, and the instructions/settings I used may not work well for your printer. In addition, many of the more complex models like the bridges and buildings are printed as multiple [sometimes dozens] separate parts that must be assembled. Assembly can be tricky, and for best results, I probably need to provide detailed step-by-step instructions with illustrations comparable to the instructions that come with commercial kits.

A really neat company, Custom Medel Railroads (CMR), makes cool laser cut acrylic kits. To get a sense of the extra work needed for me to provide instructions, check out their instructions for kits. In many cases, the documents are 20 pages long with dozens of illustrations. Now consider that CMR kits don’t require you to print anything. I would need to provide even more information to help you achieve good printing results.
